Sanyo Bussan to Introduce Imported Whiskies Including Thailand’s First Single Malt

Sanyo Bussan, which imports and sells Western liquors and other products, is stepping up its promotion of the three single malt whisky brands it handles.

The company recently held a tasting event for the media. Along with the globally beloved Scotch whiskies “Old Pulteney” and “Speyburn,” it introduced the noteworthy new whisky “Prakaan.”

The three varieties of “Old Pulteney,” produced at Pulteney Distillery in the northern Scottish port town, are characterized by a full-bodied flavor created by pot stills whose upper sections have been cut off due to size constraints. The whisky is also said to gain a mineral character from being matured near the sea.

“Speyburn,” whose packaging has been renewed, is a single malt produced in the region known as Speyside. The three varieties feature a clear taste derived from the water of a tributary of the River Spey used in the production process.

In addition, “Prakaan,” Thailand’s first and only single malt, which was born only last year, was also introduced from Southeast Asia.

“When speaking about Prakaan, nature is indispensable. There are three major natural parks, and the area is blessed with water. The malt and equipment are brought in from Scotland, and what differs are the water and the maturation environment. Its hallmark is a somewhat tropical, southern-style taste,” explained Kenichi Shiraishi, General Manager of the company’s Brand Marketing Department.

The Prakaan lineup includes three varieties, among them “Select Cask” (8,500 yen before tax), which is said to offer aromas of tropical fruit and the sweetness of honey.

At the tasting event, original pairing menus developed using each single malt were also prepared, highlighting how well they go with a diverse range of ingredients.
